Citronella-Summer

Summer is the season of getting together. Whether it’s a barbecue, a picnic, or a night out gazing at the stars — outdoors is the place to be. So long as you aren’t getting pestered by bugs and mosquitoes. This is why it is important to invest in citronella candles, use them correctly, and make them part of your outdoor décor.

What is Citronella?

Citronella is an oil that is derived from drying a grassy plant called Cymbopogon Nardus or lemongrass. This plant is native to the tropical regions of Asia, such as Sri Lanka, India, and Indonesia.

Citronella oil is obtained through a process called steam distillation. During this process, steam is passed through the grass to extract oil. This oil has been used for over 60 years as an all-natural insect repellent for outdoor spaces.

How Do Citronella Candles Work Against Mosquitoes?

Citronella candles work by releasing citronella oil into the air when they are burned. The citronella scent then repels mosquitoes, black flies, and ticks and keeps them away from the area where the candle is burning.

It’s important to use layers of repellents for your space and on your person, as these pests can carry malaria, Lyme, and other diseases.

How to Use Citronella Candles?

To get the best results from your citronella candles, it’s important to use them correctly. Here are a few tips:

Read The Label: Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. One candle might not be enough to cover a large area, so you may need to use multiple candles for larger spaces.

Let Them Burn: Citronella candles need to burn for at least 20 to 30 minutes to release enough citronella oil in the air to be effective.

Consider Size: For larger spaces, invest in bucket-style candles. These will release more citronella oil and provide better coverage.

Correct Placement: Place the candles strategically around the area you want to protect such as around your patio or deck. Don’t place them in areas with strong air flow as it can disperse the flow and reduce its efficiency.

What are Some Other Uses of Citronella Candles?

Get creative and experiment with different aesthetic approaches. For example, you could try making gel candles for a modern look or even create layered pie candles with different colors and scents. Placing citronella candles in decorative lanterns around your outdoor space adds both style and function.

Consider blending citronella with other essential oils such as lavender, peppermint, lemon, or eucalyptus to create refreshing scents that lighten up your mood and create a pleasant atmosphere.

Citronella Candles: Perfect for Summer and Gifting

Citronella candles are a natural and pleasant alternative to chemical-based insect repellents. They help you enjoy a buzz-free summer and add a warm and inviting ambiance to your patio or deck. You can also give them to friends and family who enjoy refreshing scents and love spending time outdoors.
